Beatrice “Bea” (Raskin) Schiffres

Beatrice “Bea” (Raskin) Schiffres, formerly of West Hartford, passed away Monday in Boca Raton, Fla., surrounded by her loving family. She was 95. Schiffres, a highly regarded interior designer, founded and operated Jay’s Interiors. Born in New York on March 14, 1916, Bea was the daughter of the late Nathan Raskin and Celia (Wallace) Raskin. As a child, she grew up on a farm in the Marion section of Southington before moving to Waterbury and later settling in West Hartford, where she lived for more than 20 years. She graduated from high school in NYC, and the New York School of Interior Design. In 1966, Bea and her late husband Jack started Jay’s Interiors on Park Road in West Hartford. The business moved and thrived for more than 20 years as Jay’s Interiors at The Nettle Creek Shop in Avon. The business gave Bea and Jack the opportunity to work in the homes of many local residents, dignitaries and community leaders. On one occasion, they worked with Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Robinson to design a local home for charity. Family and friends describe her as “one of the youngest 95-year-olds you’ll ever meet.” They enjoyed her sense of humor, her wit, wisdom, her effervescent smile and sense of independence. Bea was driving until very recently and going to lectures at Florida Atlantic University. Bea is survived by her sister Norma Raskin Defrancesco, son Howard Schiffres and his wife, Donna of Bristol, CT, son Robert Schiffres of East Windsor, CT and daughter Andrea (Schiffres) Rosenfield and her husband Edward of Boca Raton; granddaughters Carlianne Rosenfield of Orlando, Rachel (Schiffres) of New Haven, and Sarah Schiffres of Troy, NY; Cassie Howard of Orlando; grandson Richard Schiffres and his wife Linda of Bristol, CT; and great-grandchildren Richard Schiffres, Jr., Brian Schiffres and Ryan Dolan. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Jacob “Jack” Schiffres, her brother Abraham “Uncle Chick” Schiffres, and her granddaughter Deborah Schiffres. Burial services were private. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center or www.Caringbridge.com
