Alexandra Wiener is 2012 Nat'l Scholar-Chessplayer Award recipient

Alexandra Wiener of Westport has been selected as one of five recipients of the prestigious 2012 National Scholar-Chessplayer Award. The award, which comes with a $1500 scholarship, is presented annually by the United States Chess Federation, the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and the United States Chess Trust to top high school students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics, chess and leadership activities.
A senior at Staples High School, where she was recently names Soccer-Scholar Athlete, Wiener is currently Connecticut State Female Scholastic Champion – a title she has held seven times — and was the 2010 United States All Girls National Chess Co-Champion in the 16 years and under section. She is a two-time recipient of the Chess Magnet Junior Grand Prix Top 50 Prize (placing 17th in 2011 and 22nd in 2010) and the first student appointed to the United States Chess Federation National Committee on Education. This summer, she will once again represent the state of Connecticut at the 2012 World Chess Open and the United States Girls Junior Open Championship.
Wiener will attend Brown University in the fall, where she expects to play club soccer and compete on the chess team.
