SCHOR

Dr. Robert Schor, 82, of 6 Rose Garden Lane, Norwich, died on Friday at Backus Hospital following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gail (Beck) Schor and his sons, Daniel M. Schor of Malden, Mass., and Michael H.Schor of Westerville, Ohio. He is also survived by his niece, Dr. Juliet Schor, and his nephews David, James, and John Schor of Massachusetts. Robert was born in the Bronx, N.Y., the younger son of the late Dr. Morris and Edna Schor. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Gerald I. Schor. His education was chiefly in the technical fields, receiving his B.S. in physics from MIT, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Both schools were filled by noted inspiring physicists. Bob became a research and teaching physicist at the University of Connecticut in 1958. His research centered on the statistics of collections of complex molecules and their interactions. He contributed to advances in biophysical systems. He taught a variety of courses at all levels, including general physics, statistical methods, and astronomy. Bob was known for his discussion of thorny problems. His colleagues in the physics department could count on him as one of the first attendees at physics seminars to spot the weakness in any presentation. An avid learner, he studied languages and history. With a ready wit, his sense of humor amused everyone who knew him. He was an exceptionally caring friend to his colleagues and his community and a close confidant to his family members. He loved his family dearly, and was loved by his two dogs, Archie and Carmen, as well as his cat, Louie. Bob was preparing for his second bar mitzvah under the direction of Sherry Barnes, cantorial soloist at Temple Emanu-El. Since Bob was not a talented singer, Sherry’s patience and encouragement made him look forward to his lessons. He always spoke about what a wonderful person she is. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Backus Hospital for the excellent and compassionate care that he received during his lengthy hospitalization, as well as the support that was given to his wife, Gail. A memorial service was held at Temple Emanu-El, 29 Dayton Road, Waterford, CT.  Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Temple Emanu-El Cantor’s Fund.
