Talking Politics

At HHNE’s Oct. 3 political evening: (l to r) Adam Rabinowitz, Scott Slifka, State Senate candidate Hector Reveron, and Miriam Young.

Aron Rabinowitz is a senior member of his school’s debate club and serves as president of his local chapter of JSA (Junior State of America), so researching and discussing political issues and public policy come naturally to him. But for this Hebrew High School of New England (HHNE) senior more had to be done to engage other high school students in the political process. “It seemed like more and more of my peers felt disconnected from the political process,” he explains. “So I thought, let’s bring politics to them.”
Rabinowitz enlisted the aid of HHNE sophomore Miriam Young and, on the evening of Oct. 3, students, parents, and community members joined together at HHNE for a panel discussion on “Policy vs. Politics” with, among others, CT Secretary of State Denise Merrill and West Hartford Mayor Scott Slifka. After the discussion, participants watched the presidential debate together.
