“Disobedience” to screen in West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD – “Disobedience: The Sousa Mendes Story,” a film that tells the true story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, a World War II Portuguese diplomat, who helped save 30,000 refugees, including 10,000 Jews by granting them visas to escape the Nazis, will be screened at the Mandell Jewish Community Center on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
Sousa Mendes was the Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France in 1940, when the Nazis took control of that country.  In a handful of days, Sousa Mendes undertook what has been described as the largest rescue action by a single individual during the Holocaust.
His grandson Louis-Philippe Mendes, of Montreal, Canada, who is also the vice president of the Sousa Mendes Foundation, will be on hand to introduce the film and talk about his grandfather at a reception following the screening.
The screening is presented by the Portuguese Foundation, Inc. The Mandell JCC is host sponsor.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. For information call (860) 523-9466.
