Former UConn basketball star joins JCC basketball program

WOODBRIDGE – Former UConn women’s basketball player Maria Conlan has been named a director of the Greater New Haven Jewish Community Center (JCC) 2013-2014 Girls Youth Basketball League. The league for children in grades 2 through 7 will begin Dec. 8 and run through mid-March.

Conlan played for UConn’s women’s basketball team between 2000 and 2004.  During Conlon’s tenure, the team won three national championships and four Big East titles. Previously, she played at Seymour High School, winning two state championships and achieving the record for the most 3-pointers in a season and in one game.

In addition to Conlan, other league directors included: Steve Cahoon, who for six years served as co-director of the Woodbridge/JCC Girls’ basketball program, Dave Smith, who for six years has co-directed the Woodbridge/JCC girls’ basketball program, and Debra Kirschner, who has coached the girl’s basketball program at the JCC for 25 years and has served as the JCC’s day camps director.

The JCC also named the directors of its Boys Youth Basketball League.  They are: Byron Roberts, who played basketball at Career High School and Clark University, Michael Connor, who played basketball at Branford High School, and Allan Greenberg, who has been involved with the JCC Youth Basketball program since 1971, and currently serves as the JCC’s director of health and physical education.
