Members of Kehilat Chaverim, a collective of 80 individuals and families in the Greater Hartford area who observe Jewish customs and traditions, took the unusual confluence of Chanukah and Thanksgiving to another level when member Maggie Cohen, who bakes special challahs for the congregation’s Shabbat services, whipped up a “turkey-menorah” challah. Cohen is also co-chair of the group’s Community Action Committee, which collected turkey to feed those in need.

“This year, as we have done for the past many years, we collected 15 turkeys which we donated to the Good Samaritan Church in Hartford,” said committee co-chair Linda Busch of West Hartford. “Since Thanksgiving and Chanukah overlap this year, we are delighted to combine both holidays in our community action activities,” Ms. Cohen added.

“The donated turkeys are distributed directly to church members who are unable to celebrate the holiday without assistance,” added Cohen, who also lives in West Hartford.
