HAMDEN – Dr. Sherwin B. Nuland, author of the bestselling book, How We Die: Reflections on Life’s Last Chapter, which won the National Book Award in 1994, died of prostate cancer at his home in Hamden on March 3. He was 83.

Born Shepsel Ber Nudelman in Bronx, N.Y. on Dec. 8, 1930, he was a son of the late Meyer and Vitcha (Simonovich) Nudelman.

He received a bachelor’s degree from New York University and a medical degree from Yale in 1955, becoming chief surgical resident.

He was a surgeon at Yale-New Haven Hospital before writing How We Die. His books also included: The Wisdom of the Body, later republished as How We Live, Doctors: The Biography of Medicine, The Mysteries Within, The Art of Aging, The Uncertain Art: Thoughts on a Life in Medicine and The Soul of Medicine.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Peterson) Nuland; four children, Toria (Bob Kagan) Nuland of McLean, Va., Drew Nuland (Vivi Tang) of Shanghai, China, Will (Leila) Nuland of Reston, Va., and Molly Nuland of Stamford; and grandchildren Leni and David Kagan, and Jamin and Zoe Nuland. He was predeceased by a brother, Harvey Nuland.
