Dressing the Torah for the holidays

Like many synagogues, as part of its High Holiday ritual, The Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford changes the covers that adorn the shul’s Torah scrolls year-round to pristine white covers that add to the holiday celebration. But when Emanuel member Linda Asmar noticed that the white covers, used for more than 30 years, were no longer in pristine condition, she offered to help make new ones. Putting her prodigious needlework talents to work, she crafted Torah covers, designed by a group of lay leaders. The result: a set of simple but elegant new Torah covers that will enhance the prayer experience when they are dedicated during Rosh Hashanah services on Sept. 24. Members of the community are invited to dedicate a Torah cover in honor of or in memory of a loved one.
