ADL to honor Max Javit 

HARTFORD — The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) will honor Max Javit and Dr. Cato Laurencin at the 2014 Greater Hartford Torch of Liberty Award Reception and Centennial Gala on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 5:30 p.m., in West Hartford.

A resident of West Hartford, Javit is a retired psychiatric social worker turned real estate developer. He is an ADL National Commissioner, a former member of ADL’s Connecticut Regional Board. Deeply involved in helping troubled youth, Javit is a passionate supporter of ADL’s A World of Difference Institute, which provides anti-bullying and anti-bias education to more than 20,000 students in Connecticut annually. Involved in an estimated 40 Israeli charities, Javit and his wife, Rachel, serve on the Board of Governors at Ben Gurion University and are also supporters of Hebrew University and the Technion.

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin is the eighth university professor in the history of the University of Connecticut, where he currently serves as chief executive officer of the Connecticut Institute for Clinical and Translational Science. An orthopaedic surgeon and engineer, he has been recognized for his work by Scientific American and National Geographic. Black Enterprise Magazine named him one of the 101 Top Doctors in America. Laurencin, who lives in Avon, has been honored by two U.S. Presidents, receiving the Presidential Faculty Fellowship Award from Bill Clinton and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring from Barack Obama.
