New Haven’s Women of Vision Society announces 2014 grant recipients

The Women of Vision Society of the Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven has announced its 2014 grant recipients. The Women of Vision Society is a permanent, restricted endowment fund dedicated to helping and enhancing the lives of women in our community. Created in 1996 with its 100 founding members, the Society has since doubled in membership and giving. Since 1998, more than $130,000 has been distributed in grants to a wide variety of agencies and causes ranging from employment and literacy to acculturation and health issues. This year’s grant recipients are:

Blue Blazer Exchange – To provide blue blazers to those who cannot afford to purchase them for their children. Boys will feel a greater sense of pride and self-confidence attending special events.

BEKI: Community Havdalah Yoga – For yoga classes followed by participatory musical Havdalah services.

Discovery to Cure: Breast and Ovarian Cancer Prevention Program – To prevent the occurrence of breast and ovarian cancer among women at high risk for these diseases through screening as well as increasing genetic testing in those at risk.

Emunah Women’s Center in Afula, Israel – To provide children with a safe and nurturing environment as it works with parents in developing and improving parenting skills.

Jewish Family Service: Center for Domestic Violence – For the development of a new Domestic Violence Center that will assist Jewish female victims by providing important resources designed to help extricate them from harmful and abusive relationships.

Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven: Food4Kids – To ensure that children at risk have supplemental, nutritious food over the weekend during the academic year.

Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven New Acculturation Program: Returning to Judaism 
– For programs and support for women from the former Soviet Union who are building new connections to Judaism and who need help integrating into American society.

Temple Emanuel: Mayyim Hayyim Replica Feasibility Study – To evaluate the possibility of a non-traditional mikvah and study center, similar to Mayyim Hayyim in Boston, Mass.

Tower One/Tower East: Our Life Journeys – For a four-part series for seniors that will feature Rabbi Hesch Sommer and will inspire them to become more engaged in the Jewish community.
