Bi-Cultural’s Michal Smart wins national education award

STAMFORD – Michal Smart, director of Jewish studies at Bi-Cultural Day School, is among 33 Jewish educators from throughout North America to receive this year’s Excellence in Jewish Education award from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, it was announced recently.

A panel of leaders in education chose the 33 award recipients from a broad spectrum of ideologies, traditions and educational settings. The educator were evaluated on their ability to engage students and families, combining traditional and creative approaches to teaching, including integration of Jewish and secular studies, collaboration among generations, and a focus on Jewish values.

As an award recipient, Smart will receive many educational opportunities, including mentorship, attendance at a national conference and a stipend for professional development and programmatic enhancement.

“Our educators play a vital role in expanding Jewish identity by promoting Jewish values and inspiring students to grow in their Judaism,” said Jackie Herman, Principal and Head of School at Bi-Cultural. “They nurture spirits, enliven minds, and provide a Jewish lens through which to make the most of every day and we couldn’t be more proud of Michal for winning this prestigious award.”
