KRISTALLNACHT COMMEMORATIONS

On the 27th of Cheshvan – which begins this year after sundown on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 8 – Jews around the world will mark the 77th anniversary of “Kristallnacht” – the “Night of Broken Glass” – which is viewed by historians as the beginning of the Holocaust. Here is a list of events that will be held around the state to commemorate this sad day in Jewish history.

 

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8

Orange – A celebration of the life Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal picture and a German Jewish immigrant, who, following the events of Kristallnacht in 1938, threw himself in to the work of saving the lives of those targeted for death by the Nazis. The program will begin at 9 a.m.with a presentation by author and professor Thomas Doherty, chair of the American Studies Program at Brandeis University, and will include the presentation to the Laemmle family of a commendation by Senator Richard Blumenthal. Stamford – “Commemorating Kristallnacht: Varian Fry, The American Schindler,” with guest speaker Marion D. Percy, and short film, 1 p.m., Stamford JCC, 1035 Newfield Ave., (203) 322-7900. FREE

 

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9

West Hartford – “And You Shall Tell Your Children,” a Kristallnacht program featuring video interviews with the children of Holocaust survivors, from the “In Our Own Words” project; moderated by Avinoam Patt; 7 p.m.; Wilde Auditorium, Harry Jack Gray Center, University of Hartford.

 

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15

New Haven – Premiere of “People Forget – New Haven Remembers,” a documentary film that follows the lives of four Holocaust survivors who resettled in New Haven,” as well as the story of New Haven’s Holocaust memorial in Edgewood Park, the first Holocaust memorial built on public land anywhere in the United States – though it was not built with a dime of public money. The film is produced by Greater New Haven Holocaust Memory, Inc. (GNHHM), a non-profit dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust. Mayor Toni Harp will offer opening remarks. Two showings: 9:15 a.m. and 10 a.m.; audience discussion to follow, led by director Elena Lefkowitz. Light refreshments.
