An evening with Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau

Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau signed copies of his memoir, Out of the Depths, for those who came out to hear him speak at a Nov. 5 event hosted by Chabad of Westport at the Westport Inn — including, pictured here, Westport resident Anita Schorr, who, like Lau, is a Holocaust survivor. Lau was eight when he was liberated in 1945 from the Buchenwald concentration camp, and its youngest survivor. He immigrated with his older brother to Mandate Palestine, where he was ordained as a rabbi in 1961. Lau served as head rabbi of North Tel Aviv, Netanya, and Tel Aviv before being selected as Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Israel in 1993, a position he held until 2003. He was reinstalled as chief rabbi of Tel Aviv in 2005 and appointed chairman of Yad Vashem in 2008.
