Hartford congregation marks 80th anniversary of Austin organ

In 1934, Hartford’s Austin Organ Company – one of the oldest organ companies in the country – crafted a unique organ to match the acoustics of the sanctuary of Congregation Beth Israel on Farmington Avenue. The organ incorporates an unenclosed set of pipes that produce a broader, classical sound, as well as a specially designed stop that reproduces the sound of the shofar. This unique instrument has been designated an historic organ by the Organ Historical Society of America, and the Congregation has worked to restore the organ to its original condition.

On Dec. 20, at 4 p.m., Beth Israel will celebrate the 80th anniversary of this remarkable instrument with a free public concert featuring a performance by the synagogue’s music director, Natasha Ulyanovsky, joined by trumpet soloists Steve Owens and Gino Villarreal. An accomplished organist, pianist and conductor, Ulyanovsky is also music minister of St. Brigid Church in West Hartford. She has performed in Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Germany, Israel, and throughout New England.

Works to be performed include: Prelude and Fugue in E flat major by J.S. Bach; Concerto for Two Trumpets and Organ in B flat by A. Vivaldi; Piece Heroique by C. Franck; In Paradisum by T. Dubois; Polovtsian Dances from “ Prince Igor” by A. Borodin; and Stars and Stripes Forever by J.P. Sousa.

Beth Israel is located at 701 Farmington Ave. For more information, call (860) 233-8215.
