Carmel Academy names Jordan Soffer as Rabbi-in-Residence

GREENWICH — Jordan Soffer has been appointed Rabbi-in-Residence of Carmel Academy in Greenwich.

Soffer, who will formally join Carmel Academy’s faculty in August, will oversee the school’s t’fillah (prayer) curriculum and will be involved in community outreach to enrich family and adult Jewish experience.

“We are so excited to welcome soon-to-be Rabbi Soffer to our leadership team and to the Carmel family,” said Dr. Tali Aldouby-Schuck, Carmel Academy’s director of Judaic Studies Curriculum and Professional Development. “He is a gifted teacher who will inspire our students, teachers, parents and our community to see the richness of what Judaism offers.  Our students and families will be inspired by his energy, creativity and passion for infusing Jewish living with the love of study and a deep sense of belonging.”

A native of New City, N.Y., Soffer graduated from Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School and Solomon Schechter High School of Westchester. A self-described “proud Badger,” he earned a Bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he studied religion and Jewish education. Soffer continued his studies at Yeshivat Maaleh Gilboa, Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, and Mechon Hadar. He is currently finishing his final year of rabbinical school at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, while simultaneously completing a Masters of Education degree at Yeshiva University. He will receive his rabbinic ordination this May.

Soffer’s extensive experience working with Jewish youth includes a decade on the staff of Ramah Day Camp in Nyack, most recently as program director. He has also worked or interned at Kinneret Day School, Abraham Joshua Heschel Middle School, Congregation Orach Chaim and Hebrew Institute in White Plains.

A prolific writer, Soffer is a blogger and regular contributor to Times of Israel, ejewishphilanthropy and myjewishlearning.

“Jordan brings to Carmel Academy a background which reflects the religious diversity of our school, a thoughtfulness that matches our philosophy and a personality that is truly inspirational to everyone he meets,” said Carmel Academy’s Head of School Nora Anderson.

“I am extremely excited to be joining such a strong and vibrant community,” Soffer said. “Through my visits to Carmel, my interactions with staff and faculty, and my relationships with various students and parents, I have gotten a glimpse into the openness, innovation and warmth of the Carmel family. I know that Carmel shares my vision for dynamic, vigorous and engaging Judaism, and I am eager to join this amazing team.”

Soffer and his wife, Marti, an ObGyn resident at New York’s Mt. Sinai Hospital, live in Manhattan.
