Judy Zachs receives Women’s Philanthropy award

WEST HARTFORD – Judy Zachs of Bloomfield has been named recipient of the 2016 Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award presented by the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford’s Women’s Philanthropy, it was announced recently by Judy Schlossberg, chair of Hartford’s Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award selection committee.

Named for Lion of Judah founders Norma Kipnis-Wilson and Toby Friedland z”l, the award honors “women of valor” for their lifelong commitment to the Jewish world, says Schlossberg.

Zachs will be recognized at the International Lion of Judah Conference in Washington D.C. in September, and at the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford’s fall Lion of Judah event.

“[Judy Zachs] has been recognized for having set a high standard for philanthropy and volunteerism in our community,” noted Schlossberg, adding, “As a seasoned social work clinician and women’s group leader, Judy knows firsthand the power of women’s connections and the impact women have on their community.”

Zachs became a Lion in 1995 and shortly thereafter, endowed her annual campaign gift to ensure support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford’s annual campaign in perpetuity. She is today a Platinum Lion of Judah.

“Philanthropy motivates me and has always been a major part of my family life.”

A longtime philanthropist, Zachs has been honored for her philanthropy by the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), the Hebrew High School of New England, the Solomon Schechter Day School, the Anti-Defamation League, the University of Connecticut and more. A life trustee of the Jewish Federation, she has also served on the Boards of Directors of the Mandell JCC, Jewish Community Foundation, UConn and NCCJ.

Zachs was previously a social worker in private practice at Hartford Hospital and served as an adjunct professor at Southern Connecticut State University’s Project for Older Americans.
