Calendar Events of the Week

YOM HASHOAH – HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY EVENTS

 

“Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah”— “Day of (remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism” — is observed on the 27th day of the month of Nisan (the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising), which this year begins after sunset on the evening of Wednesday, May 4. Community events commemorating the Holocaust are planned throughout the state during that week.

 

SUNDAY, MAY 1

West Hartford – Yom Hashoah Commemoration Honoring the Martyred Six Million; reading of the names of victims and deceased survivors, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. (submit named to Sheri Gaudet at (860) 231-6351, sgaudet@mandelljcc.org; survivors and their families are invited to participate in candle procession at the beginning of the commemoration; guest speaker is “Schindler’s List” survivor Rena Finder; hosted by the JFACT, Voices of Hope and the Mandell JCC; 7:30 p.m; at The Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Dr.

Westport – Yom Hashoah program featuring New York Times reporter Joseph Berger, a Holocaust child survivor and author of Displaced Person: Growing Up American after the Holocaust; also, Jan Rudamina, former director of the Polish National Tourist Agency in North America, will discuss opportunities for American Jews visiting Poland; 4 p.m.; Beit Chaverim Synagogue, 85 Post Rd. MONDAY, MAY 2

New Haven – University of New Haven 13th Annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony featuring guest speaker Judith Alter Kallman, a Holocaust survivor and author of the memoir for young adults, A Candle in the Heart; plus a reading of the names of relatives of UNH faculty and staff who perished in the Holocaust; 3 p.m. at the university; ikleinfeld@newhaven.edu.

West Hartford – Yom Hashoah reading of victims’ names, provided by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for the Days of Remembrance; 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.; at the Mandell JCC, 335 Bloomfield Ave.

 

TUESDAY, MAY 3

Trumbull – Holocaust Remembrance Day program featuring Charlotte R. Bonelli, director of the archives of the American Jewish Committee in New York City and author of Exit Berlin: How One Woman Saved Her Family from Nazi Germany, based on a rare collection of WWII-era letters discovered by chance in the NYC studio apartment of Luzie Hatch, a German-Jewish refugee; 6:30 p.m.; at the Fairchild-Nichols Memorial Library, 33 Quality St., (203) 452-5197.

 

WEDNESDAY, MAY 4

Greenwich – Yom Hashoah Community Commemoration: JCC Cinema presents “Broken Branches,” an animated 25-minute documentary made in Israel about loss, family and hope, at 6:30 p.m.; followed at 7 p.m. by a community observance with guest speaker Arlette Levy Baker, a Holocaust survivor born in France; sponsored by JCC Greenwich at Temple Sholom, 300 E. Norwalk – Community Yom Hashoah Holocaust Commemoration, with testimony from Holocaust survivor Agnes Vertes, president of the Holocaust Child Survivors of CT; discussion led by Fairfield University professor, Dr. Gavriel Rosenfeld, a Holocaust historian; 7 p.m.; at Congregation Beth El, 109 East Ave., (203) 838-2710.

Simsbury – Annual 24-hour vigil of reading names of victims of the Holocaust hosted by Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation-Emek Shalom; begins at 6 p.m. in front of Eno Memorial Hall on Hopmeadow St., ends at 6 p.m. May 5; all are encouraged to spend 15 minutes speaking the names.
