Applications available for summer Yiddish course and fellowship program

AMHERST, Mass. – The Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts, is now accepting applicants for two renowned programs for college students and recent graduates: the 2017 Steiner Summer Yiddish Program and the 2017-18 Yiddish Book Center Fellowship Program.

The Steiner Summer Yiddish Program, which will run June 4-July 21, is an immersive program in Yiddish language and culture, with beginner and intermediate tracks, open to college and graduate students ages 18-26. Participants can earn six college credits during the intensive seven-week course while studying with leading scholars in seminar-style classes. Outside the classroom, students will take a field trip to New York, where they will attend Yiddish cultural events, and take part in events at the Yiddish Book Center, including the annual Yidstock: The Festival of New Yiddish Music. Intermediate students also participate in paid internships, working on projects at the Center. Applications are due Feb. 6. The Yiddish Book Center Graduate Fellowship, which will run from September 2017 to August 2018, offers recent graduates with backgrounds in Yiddish and Jewish studies the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience working as full-time Center staff members. Fellows may serve as teaching assistants for college-level Yiddish classes, work on the Center’s Wexler Oral History Project, develop educational materials, assist with translation and digital accessibility projects, or do bibliographic work with the Center’s extensive Yiddish book collection. They receive a $30,000 stipend as well as healthcare coverage.
