Children’s Reading Partners Seeks Summer Volunteers to Read with Students

Children’s Reading Partners is seeking volunteers to read one-on-one with preschool and elementary students at three locations in Bloomfield and Hartford this summer. Its Summer Reading League provides reading enrichment to children at Bloomfield Early Learning Center, the P. Faith McMahon Wintonbury Library in Bloomfield, and Thirman Milner School in Hartford.

“Studies show that reading with a caring adult helps children develop the skills they need to succeed in school,” said Alana Butler, director of Children’s Reading Partners, a program of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. “And reading over the summer helps kids avoid the ‘summer slump’ where they lose skills they’ve already worked hard to develop.”

Summer Reading League volunteers complete a simple application and attend a training session, then select a weekly, 30-minute time slot to read with a child over four to six weeks. Anyone age 12 or older can volunteer.

A training session for Summer Reading League will take place Wednesday, June 19 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Community Services Building, 333 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford. To learn more or to register, call (860) 727.6129 or email rbreiter@jewishhartford.org. To learn more visit www.jewishhartford.org/childrens-reading-partners.
