Blessing the Sun...in 3-D
Published: Wednesday, April 1, 2009 2:49 PM EDT
More than 100 people attended an innovative 3-D presentation one evening last week, that gave them a clear understanding of Birkat Hachama - the Blessing of the Sun that is recited every 28 years when the sun returns to the position it occupied at the beginning of the fourth day of Creation.
The next recitation of the blessing will take place on Wednesday, April 8. Led by Rabbi Chaim Shmuel Friedman, the presentation was hosted by the Yeshiva of New Haven and held at The Study at Yale, a new hotel in downtown New Haven.
The dazzling presentation used both astronomic and Talmudic concepts to convey the beauty and significance of the event in modern terms. The New Haven community will join together at the top of East Rock, a nearby mountain, on the eve of Passover to recite Birkat Hachama. A morning service will take place at sunrise so that the mitzvah may be performed at the earliest possible time, noted Rabbi Dov Greer.
