Two Fairfield residents to be honored by Jewish Home Two Fairfield residents will receive awards at the Women's Auxiliary 2010 Fall Gala of the Jewish Home for the Elderly of Fairfield County, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Water's Edge in Darien. Roy Friedman of Fairfield has been named the recipient of the Arthur and Gladys Lunin Humanitarian Award, and Sue Angel of Fairfield is recipient of the Home's Louis Lotstein Award for Distinguished Service. Roy Friedman has served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Home for the Elderly Foundation since 2004. A generous supporter of the Home, Freeman and his wife, Aline, have been instrumental in the development of the Home's new Roy and Aline Friedman Medical Home Care Agency. Aline Friedman has also been an active board member of the Women's Auxiliary for many years. As president of Standard Oil of Connecticut, Friedman has spent his professional career in the petroleum industry expanding and diversifying what was once a small, family-owned coal and charcoal business into the largest privately-owned oil company in the state. Following his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to Stratford to join his father at Standard Coal and Charcoal. Today, almost 60 years later, the small business has grown into a leader in its industry comprised of Standard Oil, Standard Electric, Standard Insurance, Standard Petroleum Gasoline, Standard Security Systems and Commercial Heating Supply of New England. Friedman has also served as director of the New England Fuel Institute and as a board member of the Independent Oil and Gasoline Dealers Association. Friedman also served as Stratford commissioner of World War II Veterans, as a board associate of the University of Bridgeport and as a board member of the Fairfield Beach Association. A Women's Auxiliary Honorary Director for Life, Sue Angel has been a Jewish Home volunteer for more than three decades. As a volunteer, Angel has served as one of the Home's tour guides, has transported hundreds of residents to recreation programs, the clinic, the rehabilitation gym, and the beauty salon and barbershop, and has assisted in the Residents' Bank, the Corner Café and on trips to New Haven's Shubert Theater.
