Shmuley Boteach declares intent to run for Congress

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Celebrity Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, best known for his book “Kosher Sex” and for spiritually advising the late rock star Michael Jackson, has announced his intention to run for Congress in New Jersey’s newly formed 9th District.  Maybe.
According to the New Jersey Jewish Standard, Boteach has sent a letter of intent to the Bergen County Republican Organization, but he has not yet made a firm decision on whether or not to actively seek the Republican nomination. He told the Standard he would reach a final decision within the next two months.
“I have cast my yarmulke into the ring by declaring my desire to seek the Republican nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s ninth district where I live,” he wrote recently in his column in the Jerusalem Post. “I am now actively exploring the viability of my candidacy and my ability to integrate existing responsibilities into the considerable effort a successful candidacy will entail.”
His platform, says Boteach, would include a plan to make marriage counseling tax-deductible and to introduce a moment of silence in public schools.
If he were to win the Republican nomination, Boteach would face the winner of the Democratic primary between U.S. Reps. Steve Rothman and Bill Pascrell.
