Temple Israel appoints new cantor

Cantor Dan Sklar

WESTPORT – Cantor Dan Sklar has been appointed cantor of Temple Israel, a Reform congregation in Westport. Sklar, who currently is serving at Westchester Reform Temple (WRT) in Scarsdale, N.Y. will join Temple Israel in July.
A native of the Chicago area, Sklar earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory in 1994, after which he worked for director Hal Prince in New York City and pursued a career as a musical theater actor. In 2001, he enrolled at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) School of Sacred Music and was invested as a cantor in 2006. He received rabbinic ordination in 2008. During cantorial and rabbinic school, Cantor Sklar also served congregations Oheb Sholom in Reading, Penn., Temple Concord in Binghamton, N.Y.), Temple Sinai in Stamford and Shaaray Tefila in New York City.
He joined Westchester Reform Temple in 2008, after serving the congregation as both a cantorial and rabbinic student. Currently, he is the congregation’s associate rabbi/cantor.
Cantor Sklar and his wife Cantor Shirah Sklar, who serves as the cantor at Temple Shalom in Norwalk, live in Westport with their three year-old son, Ari.
