New photo exhibit to highlight Jewish women’s lives in Israel and Stamford

By Cindy Mindell

STAMFORD – In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Stamford JCC will mount “A Woman’s Life,” a photo exhibit by and about women in Stamford and Afula, Israel.
The show, slated to open on March 8, 2013 and run through the month, is being organized by the Stamford JCC and spearheaded by The Center Women, a fundraising arm of the JCC.
The JCC has built a collaborative relationship over the past year with the Matnas, or community center, in Afula, the sister region of the Southern New England Consortium of 12 Jewish communities in Connecticut and Massachusetts (SNEC).
Preschool children in the JCC’s Sara Walker Nursery School and KinderPlace, and the Matnas preschool, Gan Inbal have exchanged photos and videos for Jewish holidays, Israel Independence Day, and Kabbalat Shabbat, and created an art and video project around the English and Hebrew editions of “Joseph and His Wonderful Coat,” through the PJ Library program, sponsored by United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien. Parents on both ends put together a Jewish cookbook of recipes and related stories, and the two communities are planning teen exchanges and a joint trip to Poland and Israel.
The photo exchange was a natural fit, says JCC associate executive director Nancy Schiffman. The Afula Matnas women’s group wanted to use photography as a way to showcase women’s lives in their community, and invited the Stamford JCC to join the project.
Participation in the photo exhibition is open to Stamford women, but the JCC welcomes inquiries from women in other communities, Schiffman says. Photo submissions must be high-resolution digital (.jpg) format that can produce an 8: x 10: print. Content should reflect an aspect of the photographer’s life – day-to-day activities, a family or social gathering, work, Jewish life, etc.
Submissions should be sent no later than Oct. 15, 2012 to Toby Lazarus: telpsych@aol.com.
