Singer

Lillian Margulies Singer, 91 years of age, of West Hartford, Conn., died on Thursday, August 23, 2012. Lillian was the devoted wife of the late William Singer, her husband of 49 years; the beloved mother of her three sons, Fred and Bruce of West Hartford, Conn., and Allan of Weston, Mass.; the cherished mother-in-law of Judy, Roberta, and Emil; the loving grandmother of Kimberly Lieberman of Plantation, Fla., Holly and Eliana Singer, both of West Hartford, Conn.; and the proud great-grandmother of Alexander William Lieberman and Zachary Samuel Lieberman of Florida.

Lillian was born in Bergen County, N.J. on September 5, 1920, the daughter of the late Samuel and Rose Margulies of Newark, NJ, originally from Odessa and Dvinsk, Russia, respectively. She was the caring sister of the late Helen Kelner of Boca Raton, Fla., and of her younger brother, Harold, of Parsippany, N.J., along with nephews and extended family. Lillian was always an out-going, welcoming people person becoming vice-president of the Young People’s League of Orange, N.J. and graduating from Weekquahic High School. When she moved to West Hartford, Conn. in 1940 upon her marriage to William Singer, the founder of Puritan Furniture, she stayed active in community life. Lillian, a member of Beth David Synagogue in West Hartford, Conn., was a life member and vice president of the Sisterhood of Beth David Synagogue, as well as a life member of both the Hebrew Home & Hospital and the Hebrew Academy. In 1972 and 1977, she was awarded citations for dedicated service on behalf of Torah Judaism from Beth David Synagogue Sisterhood. More recently, Lillian was the recipient of the Annual Lillian Margulies Singer Lecture on Jewish Humor at the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies, University of Hartford. For many years, Lillian also organized and facilitated monthly meetings of The Friendship Club, gathering together many of her friends for celebrating life and laughter over lunch. Lillian is survived by her family and her many treasured friends who have been inspired by her life.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 26, 2012, with interment in Beth David Synagogue Cemetery.
