“Light One Candle for Hunger” brought more than 100 people to The Emanuel Synagogue on Wednesday evening, Nov. 27 – the first night of Chanukah – for an event aimed at helping to end hunger in Greater Hartford. The crowd shared the light of a menorah created by sculptor Hans Stargardter, enjoyed sufganiyot (jelly donuts) and cider, sang songs led by Hazzan Sandy Cohn and the Emanuel Choirs. Emanuel Religious School students Johs Cohn, Sarah Cohn and Jessica Edelson presented more than $2,000 in donations (collected at Mitzvah Day) to Gloria McAdam of Foodshare and Shari Cantor of the Anja Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry, to help feed the hungry. Community partners taking part in what is hoped to be an annual event included: Emanuel B’yadeynu, Brotherhood and Sisterhood, the Church of St. Timothy, Greater Hartford Rabbinic Association, Jewish Federation Association of CT, Foodshare and the Anja Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry.
