Greater Hartford Int’l Holocaust Remembrance Day to be held Jan. 29

Voices of Hope and the Jewish Federation Association of CT (JFACT) will host the 13th Annual Greater Hartford International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorating the 78th anniversary since the January 1945 Liberation of Auschwitz on Sunday, Jan. 29, 12:30 p.m., at The Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive in West Hartford.

The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this annual day of commemoration, the UN urges every member state to honor the victims of the Nazi era and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.

The program will include:

  • The presentation of the 2023 Chesed Award to Nina Jacobs, which is bestowed upon individuals who demonstrate exemplary “acts of loving kindness”.
  • The presentation of the Simon Konover Recognition for Excellence in Holocaust Teaching which will be presented to Rachel Torres from Newtown High School and Joe Goldman from E.O. Smith High School.
  • Keynote address from Joel Lohr, President and Professor at the Hartford International University for Religion and Peace, will speak about antisemitism and its rise and how it impacts the entire community.
  •  Kosher brunch
