Bridging the gap

The finished project.

At the fourth annual food sculpture event, held on Sunday, March 15 in Ridgefield, the Temple Shearith Israel community created a bridge sculpture symbolizing the need to “bridge the gap” between those who have enough to eat and those who do not.  Students, congregants and volunteers built the bridge and its “accouterments” – e.g., trucks, cars, boats, trains and even lampposts – all from donated food.  Participants hope the project will raise awareness of hunger and financial need in local communities. The sculpture will be on display at the Ridgefield Recreation Center entranceway through Sunday, May 3; after that it will be disassembled and the food donated to local food pantries. Shearith Israel will continue to accept donations of non-perishable food items in a collection box next to the sculpture while it is on display.
