(JNS) The World Jewish Congress has published<\/a> a 19-page report summarizing two months of research into the issue of skewed coverage regarding Israel found on Wikipedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Released on Tuesday on the sidelines of the ongoing session of the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, \u201cThe Bias Against Israel on Wikipedia\u201d was written by Shlomit Aharoni Lir, senior fellow researcher at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan and the University of Haifa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe report is also based on the experience of hundreds of editors who have been working since Oct. 7 on adding articles related to the terrorist attacks and on combating the bias,\u201d Yfat Barak-Cheney, WJC\u2019s director of international affairs and human rights, told JNS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WJC\u2019s research points to four problems that undermine Wikipedia\u2019s utopian founding principles of democratic discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, the report notes that according to surveys, only 13% of the site\u2019s editors are women, which \u201chas great significance with respect to the reliability of the data and issues related to who is worthy of value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, Lir identifies the bullying and \u201cedit war\u201d culture that has developed around Wikipedia, which she characterizes as \u201can unpleasant general atmosphere in Wikipedia, which makes cooperation difficult and even discourages users, especially new ones.\u201d Next, the report points to how higher-level administrators can abuse their powers with seeming impunity and that the culture of anonymity fuels incivility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As examples of anti-Israel bias, the report names such pages as \u201cPalestinian Genocide Accusation,\u201d \u201cPalestinian Enclaves,\u201d \u201cNakba Denial,\u201d \u201cZionism as Settler Colonialism\u201d and Comparisons Between Israel and Nazi Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of bias the report identifies include delegitimizing terminology, lack of context, omission of significant details, one-sided sources, emphasizing negative examples and linking to pages like \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JNS contacted Wikipedia about these issues but received no response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report concludes with a number of recommendations to increase neutrality on the site<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo date, Wikipedia has not shown any motivation to change,\u201d Barak-Cheney told JNS. \u201cHowever, it strongly supports the value of neutrality, and its goal should be to examine these claims and make changes as needed.
