MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

The following are events hosted by Connecticut’s Jewish communities to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

 

FRIDAY, JANUARY 16

Chester – Civil Rights Shabbat in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, with guest speaker Andrew Cohen, author of Two Days in June: JFK and the 48 Hours that Made History; featuring the Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek choir; 7:30 p.m.; CBSRZ, 55 East Kings Hwy., (860) 526-8920.

Hamden – Annual Martin Luther King Interfaith Service with guest speaker Rabbi David Saperstein, newly-appointed Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom; 18 clergy from different faiths will attend; 7:30 p.m., Congregation Mishkan Israel, 785 Ridge Road, (203) 288-3877. FREE

Stamford – Shabbat service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King with guest speaker Rabbi Phil Schechter, who was active in the Civil Rights Movement while he was assistant rabbi at Temple Oheb Shalom in Baltimore. He was arrested for trespassing at a segregated amusement park along with an interracial protest group that included Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish clergy. Westport – MLK Shabbat service honoring the legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, with guest speaker Rev. Dr. Anthony Bennett of Mount Aery Baptist Church in Bridgeport; 6:30 p.m.; Temple Israel, 14 Coleytown Road.

 

SUNDAY, JANUARY 18

Chester – Performance by Sweet Honey in the Rock in honor of Martin Luther King, part of Music and More series, 3 p.m., Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, 55 East Kings Highway, (860) 526-8920. $30

Ridgefield – Singers are welcome to join the rehearsal for community choir performance at MLK Black/Jewish Spirituals Music Shabbat, rehearsal at 2-4 p.m., (service will be held on Friday, Jan. 23), Temple Shearith Israel, 46 Peaceable St., (203) 438-6589. RSVP a must.

 

MONDAY, JANUARY 19

New Canaan – Annual Service of Remembrance in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King; sponsored by Interfaith of New Canaan, including the New Canaan Jewish Group; keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Serene Jones, president of Union Theological Seminary in New York City; 10:30 a.m.; at United Methodist Church, 165 South Ave.; bring items for the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County.

West Hartford – “The State of the Dream: A Community Conversation About Diversity,” a program in honor of Martin Luther King Day; with Deacon Art Miller, director of the Office for Back Catholic Ministries for the Archdioces of Hartford; Cheryl A.
