New Haven’s Volunteer Reading Partners to host info session, Sept. 11

The Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) will host an information and orientation session for volunteers interested in reading with children in New Haven public schools for one hour each week.  The session will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven, 360 Amity Rd. in Woodbridge.
JCL is a non-denominational program that recruits, trains, places and supports volunteer reading partners to read one-to-one with children in New Haven public schools. Volunteers choose the day of the week, time of day and specific school and grade level.  No experience is required.
Literacy specialists will be on hand to share best practices in small group break-out sessions.  Sessions will include: modeling a reading session; how to choose the right book; and boundaries and confidentiality for volunteers in schools, and more.
Begun in 1994, JCL is a project of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven.
