ADLER

Julian Adler, 93, of West Hartford, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016 after a lengthy illness at the Hebrew Health Care. He was the beloved husband of Libby (Gillman) Adler for 73 years. Born in Hartford on June 20, 1923, he was the son of David and Lena (Epstein) Adler. Julian was a graduate of Weaver High School class of 1941. He was a World War II veteran having served in the 20th Air Force from 1943-1946 as part of the 505 B-29 Bomb Group based on Tinian Island in the Pacific. Julian was a Mason in the former Level Lodge 137 A.M.F.M. He enjoyed walking, jogging, bicycling, and swimming but his passion was always playing tennis. Julian was an avid Red Sox and UConn Girls Basketball fan. Julian owned Adler’s Clothiers in Hartford for 20+ years and then worked at Sage-Allen in Hartford as the Men’s Clothing Buyer and Manager for 22 years, retiring in 1988. In the late 1940’s he was the founder and first president of the Upper Albany Avenue Merchants Association. Julian and his wife Libby were life-long members of Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford. They started a program there for seniors in the late 1990’s and were named Volunteers of the Year in 1998. Julian was on the Beth Israel Board of Trustees for six years. Julian and Libby volunteered at the Hebrew Home & Hospital for 20 years and in 2001 they received the Outstanding Volunteer Award. Besides his wife Libby, he is survived by his beloved daughter Laura Valfer and her husband Gilbert of Newington, along with his treasured grandchildren, Karen and Daniel. Julian is also survived by his sister Evelyn Dvorin and the rest of his extended family and dear friends. Julian was predeceased by his sisters Fay Rothman and Sylvia Platt.
