On Monday, Nov. 18, four-year-old students in the Selma Maisel Nursery School (SMNS) of Temple Sholom visited the Neighbor to Neighbor Food Bank at Christ Church with their teachers, Rabbi Mitchell M. Hurvitz, and Phyllis Lyons, director of the Greenwich preschool, to deliver donations and help stock the shelves.
Every Friday throughout the school year, the preschoolers fulfill the mitzvah of tzedakah by bringing non-perishable food items to school. The children visited the food pantry to see where the food that they bring to school goes. Rabbi Mitch explained to the children that families who don’t have money to buy food “shop” at the food pantry for free because people – like them – are kind enough to donate food.
