Gary Lessen to be honored by Stamford shul

Cantor George Mordecai

Gary Lessen will be honored by Temple Beth El (TBE) in Stamford on Sunday, June 3 at 7 p.m. The evening will feature a concert of modern, ethnic and traditional Israeli music performed by the synagogue’s Cantor George Mordecai and Cantor Deborah Jacobson, who served at Beth El from 2002 to 2005. A reception will follow.
A Beth El member since 1991, Lessen first became active at TBE as a tutor in its religious school. He joined TBE’s Board of Education, eventually serving as its chair. Lessen was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1998 and to the Executive Committee in 2003, and he served on a variety of TBE committees. He served as president of TBE from 2007-2009. Today, he is an active member of the Board of Trustees, serving as advisor to the president.
“I am honored to be co-presenting a program of Israeli music with my friend and colleague, Deborah,” said Mordecai. “We have wanted to perform together since we were students at the Jewish Theological Seminary. I am thrilled that we finally have the opportunity to do this and at what better place than Beth El, my home, where Deborah had such a powerful impact.”
Beth El Temple is located at 350 Roxbury Road in Stamford. Tickets to the concert are $36.
