WEINER

Abby Weiner, 89, of West Hartford, formerly of Elmsford, New York, passed away peacefully on January 23, with his beloved wife of 56 years, Bonnie (Levine) Weiner, by his side. Born in Sighet, Romania, he was the son of the late Chaim and Gittel Weiner. Abby was a survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps and was liberated from Buchenwald on April 11,1945. After emigrating to the United States from London, he served in the U.S. military in Korea during the war. He rebuilt his life in New York and worked as a menswear haberdasher and retailer for 50 years. He was active in the Jewish communities of Westchester County, New York and West Hartford, Connecticut. Most recently he was a sought-after speaker, sharing his experiences during the Holocaust and promoting the universal messages of peace, love of humanity, and vigilance against hatred.  In addition to his wife Bonnie, he is survived by his children, Gayle Temkin and her husband Steven of West Hartford, Dr. Howard Weiner and his wife Barbara of Houston, TX; and five grandchildren, Alyssa and Lily Temkin, and Hannah, Noah and Leo Weiner.
