Two CCSU instructors win awards

WEST HARTFORD – Robert Kagan of Avon and Joan Walden of West Hartford are the recipients of Central Connecticut State University’s (CCSU) 2018 Excellence in Teaching (EIT) Awards. The two CCSU faculty members received their awards at a reception held on Friday, April 26.

The annual award is presented to CCSU faculty members in recognition of their “dedication to the success and fulfillment of [their] students as lifelong learners.”

A decades-long, part-time instructor at CCSU, Kagan also served as chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College until his retirement three years ago.

Walden, who was one of 55 faculty members named to the EIT Honor Roll, has taught writing, film studies, public speaking and other communication courses at the University of Hartford and Tunxis Community College. She has been an adjunct in CCSU’s Communication Department since 2009. Presently, she is working there full-time.

Coincidentally, Kagan and Walden share more than the EIT Award.

“In 2002 Bob Kagan hired me to teach a course at MCC,” recalled Walden. “It was the beginning of my second career as a college instructor, and I have found it to be a meaningful and stimulating occupation.”
